Department Summary:

MITRE is at the leading edge in solving problems in wireless communications, signal processing, and PNT [position, navigation, and timing]. This position is for a senior spectrum scientist to assist in MITRE's current and prospective work on identifying, prototyping, and evaluating various spectrum sharing, compatibility, and spectrum management concepts.

Roles & Responsibilities:

The candidate will be expected to lead and contribute technically to several projects within the department. Additionally, they will interact with department senior staff to help to secure funding to increase our capabilities via sponsor work and internal research and development. Responsibilities may also include:
  • Performing technical reviews of products produced by the staff
  • Providing guidance on how to improve these products
  • Engagement with sponsors and government stakeholders
  • Develop relationships across MITRE Labs, MNS and MPS across MITRE
  • Help foster university and industry associations and an ability to leverage external skill sets


Basic Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 7 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 4 years' experience; or equivalent combination of related education
  • Candidates must have strong technical skills in domains relevant to the department.
  • Ability and desire to document results through technical and non-technical briefings, memos, and formal reports
  • Ability to communicate complex concepts to different audiences; from high-level descriptions to detailed explanations is also required
  • Active Secret clearance with the ability to obtain a Top Secret or higher clearance.
  • History of peer-reviewed publications
  • History of Mitre sponsor engagement
  • The successful candidate should have a track-record of experience with diverse technical teams that include disciplines such as 4G/5G, radio frequency propagation, statistical analysis, radio frequency circuits, antenna performance analysis, machine learning, pattern recognition, and/or statistical signal processing applied to at least one of the following signal processing applications:
    • Support wireless communications systems development and analysis, including modulation, coding, channel equalization, interference cancellation, and geolocation for spectrum-related applications
    • Support projects developing, applying, and evaluating state-of-the-art signal processing algorithms for satellite navigation systems. Tasks focus on development of advanced navigation signals and receiver signal-time system-level demonstration
    • Support projects developing, applying, and evaluating state-of-the-art signal processing algorithms for sensor systems. Tasks focus on the use of sensing technologies, such as radar and video, to support defense and intelligence applications.
  • This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site


Preferred Qualifications:

Candidates will have a background in electrical engineering, physics, computer science or mathematics and a strong foundation in signal processing and knowledge about communication/SIGINT theory and/or PNT theory along with understanding the impacts of these domains with the application of AI/ML approaches. We are also looking for experience in information and communication system engineering, estimation and classification, radar systems, and image and video processing.

The candidate should have academic and/or professional experience with as many of the following topics as possible:
  • Supervised/Unsupervised learning processes
  • Variety of machine learning structures: support vector machine, probabilistic graphical models, neural networks, etc.
  • Digital signal processing and stochastic processes
  • Engineering mathematics: calculus, differential equations, linear algebra
  • Wireless communications
  • Detection and estimation
  • Proficient with Python, C/C++, and/or MATLAB
  • Software development, debugging, and support
  • Active TS Clearance
  • Data parsing, reduction, analysis, and visualization.

Salary compensation range and midpoint:
$171,500 - $214,500 - $257,500 Annual
