Location: East Falmouth, MA
Department: Hardware Engineering / Technician
Work Arrangement: On-site
Spear AI is seeking an experienced technician with maritime experience. You will be
part of a cross-functional team designing, building, testing, and deploying unmanned
maritime sensor systems. The initial focus is on acoustics but will quickly expand to
other modalities, including mobile systems.
Spear AI serves the national security industry and provides hardware, software, and
data solutions that span levels of classification and are intended for operational
deployment. Spear AI is a rapidly growing company with a commitment to the rapid
development of excellent products through continuous fielding. You will be in the lab and
out on the water frequently.
Responsibilities
You will initially be the primary technician at Spear AI, with the expectation that the team
will grow over time. As such, you should have at least some level of skill in each of the
following areas. This position is intended to be a high-level, jack-of-all-trades technician
role, with future hires expected to provide deeper expertise in specific domains.
● Mechanical Fabrication – Fabricate and assemble mechanical components and
systems for sensor systems and buoys.
● Electrical Fabrication – Build wiring harnesses, assemble electrical
components, and battery packs.
● Testing – Test components, subsystems, and systems in the lab and field with
limited documentation and procedures.
● Troubleshooting – Troubleshoot systems in the lab and field. Interact with
engineers to elicit needed information and improve documentation.
● Maritime Operations – Organize and eventually lead maritime test operations,
including deployment, maintenance, and recovery of instrumentation systems
from small boats.
● Training – Mentor new operators and technicians as Spear grows. Collaborate
with engineers and trainers to develop materials for customer operator training
(may include active-duty personnel).
, ● Engineering Interaction – Provide feedback to engineers on design durability,
documentation, maintainability, and more. Over time, act as a feedback hub for
other technicians.
Requirements
● Exemplary attention to detail, a focus on quality, and an uncompromising
approach to safety.
● Broad mechanical fabrication experience, including (but not limited to): additive
manufacturing, basic machining, composites, welding, and assembly.
● Broad electrical fabrication experience, including: wiring harnesses, board
population and repair, and battery pack assembly.
● Experience testing components and systems, including: system turn-on, pressure
testing, cable verification, visual and measurement inspection.
● Maritime operations experience, including: small boat handling, over-the-side
deployment, field repair, and test logistics.
● Strong written and verbal communication skills suited to a high-performance
development team.
● Physical ability to participate in at-sea operations, including lifting, carrying,
small-boat maneuvering, verbal communication, and fine manipulation.
● Must be a U.S. Citizen. You may be asked to obtain a SECRET security
clearance (at no cost to you). CIA background requirements can help explain
eligibility.
Desired Additional Qualifications
● Experience with mechanical CAD, especially SolidWorks.
● Experience with wiring harness documentation.
● USCG Captain’s License or extensive experience operating small boats.
● Prior leadership experience.
● Veteran status or strong familiarity and comfort working with both enlisted and
commissioned military personnel.
