Responsibilities
- Work with a team of engineers and researchers to improve the performance of developing weapon concepts and apply innovative technologies to these concepts.
- Provide system and engineering support for certifying current and future Naval Surface Combat Systems and associated elements.
- Apply computational and analysis methods to developmental munitions concepts.
- Contribute to research study plans for new weapon system designs, testing new materials and prototypes for future production, and reviewing the results to develop new products.
- Apply computational fluid dynamics models and other analytic methods to analyze the weapon system aerodynamic and stability characteristics.
- Study aerodynamic systems using empirical methods, including data from wind tunnel facilities.
- Research and analyze engineering data to iterate and develop precision weapons.
- Prepare certification-related documentation, including Certification Plans, Statements of Findings (SOFs), assessment and status reports, and authorization or certification letters for Combat Systems.
- Test weapon systems aerodynamic response to verify function and performance.
- Design and assemble control panels, propulsion systems, guiding systems, computer systems and other necessary parts and systems.
- Coordinate activities with production, research, testing and other departments to optimize safety and efficiency.
- Write design proposals, reports, manuals and other technical documents.
- Use mathematical, scientific, and engineering principles to design and improve the aerodynamic characteristics of weapon systems including gun-launched munitions and rocket propelled systems.
- Guide and instruct government and additional personnel on the alternative technical approaches, being used as a resource to the technical community.
Requirements
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science (BS) degree from an accredited college or university in an engineering, scientific, or technical discipline
- Professional technical experience which includes performing mechanical and/or aerospace systems requirements management, engineering, and processes (e.g. MATLAB, SolidWorks or ProEngineer)
- Demonstrated understanding of state-of-the-art materials, mathematics, science, thermodynamics, mechanics, aerodynamics, production methods.
- Excellent research, problem-solving and critical thinking skills
- Effective verbal and written communication, project management and planning expertise
- Proficiency with high performance computer systems and aerodynamic modeling techniques
