Northrop Grumman's Command and Control Weapons (CWI) Division is seeking a Senior Principal Engineer, Software in Newport News, VA. The selected team members will have the opportunity to work on multiple projects in a dynamic people-focused environment where they will interact with users, customers, and other developers on various Command and Control Systems.

Job Duties:
  • Full life cycle product development on a variety of architectures and target hardware platforms
  • Perform as an individual contributor on an Agile Scrum team
  • Participates in design development, peer code reviews, troubleshooting activities
  • Develops unit and functional tests
  • Supports the development of software documentation
  • Provides mentorship to junior engineers


Basic Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's degree in a STEM (Science/Technology/Engineering/Mathematics) or related field with 9 years experience or A Master's degree in a STEM related field with of 7 years experience or A PhD degree in a STEM related field with 4 years experience or a High School diploma / equivalent with 13 years experience may be accepted in lieu of degree
  • Various programming languages (e.g. Java, C, C++, Python, Perl, etc.)
  • Source code management tools (e.g., CVS, Subversion, git)
  • Experience programming inside IDEs (Eclipse, VSCode, Netbeans, etc.)
  • Prior experience with software development of Global Command and Control - Joint (GCCS-J) applications
  • Prior programming experience for Windows and/or Linux Operating Systems
  • Active Secret security clearance or ability to obtain prior to Start Date
  • Position is On-site in Newport News, VA.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Understanding of Object-Oriented Programming and Design concepts
  • Experience with:
    • Javascript/Typescript and Various JavaScript UX Frameworks (e.g. Angular, VueJS, React, etc.)
    • Java Rest Services
    • Kafka, RabbitMQ/ActiveMQ/JMS
    • Hazelcast
    • Postgres, Cassandra
    • Graph Databases
    • Docker/Podman/Kubernetes
    • Micro Service Architectures
    • Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, Spring Data
    • Maven, NPM, Jenkins packaging/build tools
    • Test-driven software development
    • Unit Testing frameworks
    • Understanding of networking and network troubleshooting
  • Knowledge of the Atlassian Suite (JIRA, Confluence, Crucible, etc.)
  • Rudimentary Linux and Windows System Administration skills
  • Ability to apply mathematical and statistical operations towards software algorithms
  • Familiarity with Command and Control (C2) Systems
  • Background in military intelligence and imagery, or strategic planning

Salary Range: $124,900.00 - $187,300.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
