The Alaka`ina Foundation Family of Companies (FOCs) is looking for an Associate Science Supervisor/Study Director to provide research support administration services for our government customer in Fort Dietrick, Maryland .

The Associate Supervisor/Study Director is to serve as a point of contact for projects focused on research investigating host/pathogen interactions of high-consequence viral pathogens at for the National Institutes of Health (NIH)/National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Disease (NIAID)/Division of Clinical Research (DCR)/Integrated Research Facility at Fort Detrick (IRF-Frederick), located in Frederick, Maryland. This scientific position will support efforts to develop and characterize in vitro and in vivo models for viral infections and diseases, in vitro and in vivo imaging of viral infections, and/or [JK1] assessments of candidate medical countermeasures. The individual in this role will perform and oversee performance of various molecular, virologic, microscopic, biochemical, and immunologic assays. The individual will be responsible for data collection, review, analysis, presentation, and publication.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Serves as a Study Director and collaborates with other researchers of multiple specialties on projects that support the mission of the IRF-Frederick.
  • Maintains strong working knowledge of viral pathogeneses, medical countermeasure R&D, state-of-the-art in vitro systems to interrogate virus-host interactions, and methods to assess disease outcomes in animal models of high-consequence viruses.
  • Is responsible for coordinating research collaborations with multiple IRF-Frederick subbranches laboratories and supervisory responsibility for assigned technical staff, including planning, scheduling, and staffing requirements.
  • Is responsible for coordinating research collaborations with outside partners/collaborators from Academia, industry, and government entities from other departments, including planning, scheduling, and staffing requirements.
  • Performs laboratory experiments, including assay development.Writes, edits, and presents study reports, manuscripts, and data for assigned projects internally and externally.
  • Publishes results in peer-reviewed, ideally high-impact, national and international journals
  • Develops, updates, and adheres to standard operating procedures (SOP) protocols and methods.
  • Identify and solve common problems relating to laboratory methodology, instrumentation and procedure.
  • Participates in training as required and trains others on equipment, assays, and procedures. Identifies and solves common or arising challenges related to equipment, assays, and procedures.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned.

General Lab Duties include:
  • General lab organization and maintenance.
  • Maintenance cell line, plasmid, freezer, and reagent inventories, as required.
  • Preparation of packages for shipment; maintain lab cell lines, supplies, common laboratory stocks, and laboratory equipment.
  • Participation in general laboratory housekeeping, including biohazard waste management.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

REQUIRED DEGREE/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:
  • Ph.D., MD, DVM or equivalent degree in virology or related field from an accredited college or university with at least six (6) years of specialized training.
  • Must be able to obtain/maintain DoJ Security Risk Assessment (SRA) approval.
  • Must be willing to participate in periodic drug screening.
  • Must have the ability to obtain/maintain compliance in the NIH Biosurety Program.
  • Must have the ability to obtain/maintain CDC Select Agent Program approval.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Strong publication record.
  • Demonstrated track record of leading scientists and technical support staff.
  • Experience with in virto and animal models of virus infections and diseases.
  • Experience working with Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees
  • Must be willing to work under BSL-2, BSL-3, and in particular, BSL-4 conditions. Must be able to wear respiratory protection.
  • Ability to work independently, design experiments, and analyze, summarize, and present data.

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Experience with viral Select Agents is desired but not required.
  • Current experience working in a BSL-4 laboratory.
  • Experience with viruses.
  • Basic understanding of laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication, and organizational skills.

REQUIRED CITIZENSHIP AND CLEARANCE:
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Must be able to meet the requirements for Tier 3 clearance
