Program Overview:

KBR was selected to support the US Space Force/Air Force Research Laboratory's ASTRO (Advanced Space Technology Research and Optimization) contract to provide mission equipment operations, maintenance, and upgrades to the USSF's AMOS site in Maui, Hawaii. The AMOS site plays a vital role in national security by monitoring man-made objects in space and continuously developing next-generation capabilities to keep pace with the expanding space domain. This presents an incredible opportunity to push the boundaries of space and telescope technologies.

Position Overview:

AMOS's telescope operators and maintainers are the key to AMOS's mission support ing routine and specialized tests , site upgrades and specialized mission operations for the United States Space Force at their AMOS Site .
  • Duties include maintaining electro-mechanical mission equipment in a ready state to support 24x7x365 operation s , including telescopes, shutters, motor controllers, sensors, mounts, hydraulics , motors, actuators, and associated equipment .
  • Rapidly resolve equipment issues and recommend improvements to reduce downtime and increase reliability.
  • Perform routine maintenance, repairs, rebuilds, adjustments, tests and on-site calibration on mission equipment . T roubleshoot and review equipment health and status reports for trends that indicate performance degradation or off-nominal operating states that may lead to failure. Regularly inspect equipment connectors /seals to check for proper seating , leaks, wear, or other signs that may require corrective action/replacement.
  • P erform calibration and end-to-end system testing of mission equipment .
  • As required, support o perat ions at the AMOS site .
  • Use test equipment for testing and isolating faulty equipment /connections . Provide update s and proper reporting of any faulty equipment for upper-level maintenance action.
  • Independently o perates and monitors complex mission equipment at the AMOS site. S upport s Engineers in the design, development, modification, and improvement of products/processes. Activities include but are not limited to: identifying and recommending improvements/preventive actions, inspecting, testing, maintaining, researching, repairing, and installing equipment and systems. Tests new and modified products, processes, and/or systems. Requires broad knowledge of operational procedures and tools obtained through work experience and may require vocational / technical education or on-the-job training . Works under limited supervision for routine situations. Provides assistance and training to lower - level employees. Problems may be non-routine but not complex.
  • Knowledge of and able to independently perform routine operation of mission equipment. M aintain s effective working relationships with Government Customer , other site contractors and other team members .

Key Responsibilities :
  • P erforms mostly routine telescope and mission equipment maintenance and repairs, including calibration, tests and developing operating procedures. Supports special and/or off-nominal equipment testing/ operations as required . May support testing events where new or replacement equipment is introduced into the baseline to ensure issues can be resolved rapidly . May mentor and oversee operations of less experienced staff.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves equipment issues .


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate Degree and a minimum of 5 years of related experience (e.g., operating custom-built/specialized mechanical or electrical equipment ) ; or requires an equivalent combination of related training and experience.
  • Clearance: Ability to obtain a Secret clearancerequ ired


Desired Qualifications:
  • Four (4) years experience maintaining telescope systems with minimal supervision .
  • CAD design of simple parts and/or machining skills .
  • Clearance: A ctive Secret desired


Compensation range:

$71,000 - $110,000

The offered rate will be based on the selected candidate's knowledge, skills, abilities and/or experience and in consideration of internal parity.

Additional Compensation:

KBR may offer bonuses, commissions, or other forms of compensation to certain job titles or levels, per internal policy or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be in the form of sign on bonus, relocation benefits, short term incentives, long term incentives, or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.

Work Environment:

KBR supports work from home when compatible with meeting contract requirements . AMOS is a dynamic work environment, and this contract supports routine operations of and maintenance of mission equipment, as well as the need to respond to real-world events. To the extent possible, schedules are forecasted in advance, but upgrades, maintenance or significant tests require personnel to be present in the telescope facilities on Haleakala or Government's Kihei office. Candidate must have effective verbal and written communication skills; must be able to adapt communication style to suit different audiences or facilitate group discussions; develop accurate written materials to communicate information clearly and concisely.
