If so, we are looking for you to join our growing team as a Health and Safety Specialist.

You will work alongside highly skilled, dedicated Environmental Health and Safety professionals who share a common goal of ensuring a safe and healthy workplace for our employees. As part of the EHS team, you will collaborate with staff throughout the facility to mitigate risks and ensure regulatory compliance.

As a Health and Safety Specialist you will:

• Support EHS Programs by developing, implementing, and evaluating safety policies and procedures to ensure a safe workplace.
• Conduct Site Inspection and Audits of all facilities and work areas to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety standards.
• Develop and Conduct Safety Training on a wide variety of EHS-related topics.
• Compete Incident Reporting through the investigation and documentation of accidents, incidents, and near-miss event.
• Maintain Proficiency in regulations, standards, guidelines and trends in safety and health to anticipate and evaluate their impact on related research programs.
• Manage the EHS monitoring equipment program by maintaining the EHS laboratory, ensuring equipment function and calibration of the suite of industrial hygiene and health physics instrumentation, and coordinating the radiation badge monitoring program.
• Participate in Risk Assessments to identify and mitigate safety risks associated with various tasks and projects.
• Collaborate closely with Lab staff to integrate safety culture into research functions and daily operations.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

• Possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental Health and Safety, Safety Science, Safety Engineering, or other similarly named degree program.
• Have a solid understanding of health, safety, and environmental regulations and best practices.
• Have outstanding problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Exhibit effective written and verbal communication skills, including experience with group presentations and training.
• Thrive in a collaborative environment, with clear communication and a positive outlook.
• Are able to obtain a Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You will go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

• Have experience in an EHS role, especially in a laboratory research environment.
• Maintain a relevant professional certification (e.g., CIH, CSP) or initial credential on the path to certification (e.g., GSP, ASP).
• Actively participate in professional associations, like AIHA, ASSP.
• Hold an active Secret security clearance.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development.
