Description

ALEX is hiring a Data Science Intern with a background in computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, back-end engineering, or full stack engineering with strong creative problem-solving skills to support our integrated Data Science Team. With a heavy focus on professional development, the selected candidate will be mentored by senior members of our award-winning team and will assist in the ongoing development of our cutting-edge Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools.

Requirements

The selected candidate may support various projects as well as developing, testing, deploying, and supporting tools in various operating environments.

Specific skills and duties include:

• An understanding of basic computer science, front & back-end technologies, database and cache techniques, containerization, and orchestration.
• Technical proficiency with Python.
• Experience with Git.
• A basic knowledge of web architecture.
• Excellent communications skills - both verbal and written.
• Works well in team environment.
• Ability to conduct detailed, annotated research.
• Familiarity with Natural Language Processing tools.
• Recent experience working in a remote/virtual environment with reliable internet connectivity and appropriate bandwidth for development-related projects.

Assigned tasks will support the Data Science Team in areas of web development, data engineering, data science, data analytics, software engineering and DevOps. The selected candidate will interface with technical leaders in their specialized areas and be oriented to a Continuous Integration/Continuous Development (CI/CD) engineering approach.

Some representative tasks could include:

• Participate in designing and integrating RESTful APIs.
• Integration of user-facing elements developed by front-end developers with server-side logic.
• Optimizing the performance of applications for full-scale production deployments.
• Support model training and NLP tool development.
• Work within Cloud environments and all the associated areas to develop tools, test them then deploy them into a Cloud.
• Participate in creating data pipelines.
• Support software engineering efforts on the team.
• Support various data storage technologies and data management approaches.
• Participate in cyber protection (Information Assurance) activities.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

• Experience with web protocols, Linux/Unix tools, and architecture.
• Experience with databases such as Cassandra, NoSQL, S-3 storage, or PostgreSQL.
• Experience with Django web framework.
• Experience with automation, testing, or framework development.
• Experience with data science toolkits.
• Prior military experience with data collection systems, intel product building, intel analysis , processing, and distribution.
• Knowledge of military organizations, missions and equipment sets.

Education and Certifications:

• Current college student.
• Completion of two or more years of undergraduate study with a major in any Information Technology related field (data science, software engineering, computer science, etc.) or another relevant academic field combined with related job experience.
• Exceptional candidates with only one-year undergraduate studies completed with significant relevant technical experience and documented proficiency accumulated elsewhere may be considered.
• US Citizenship required.

Salary Description

$22.00 / Hr.
