Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • The Communications Engineer will be responsible for supporting implementation of network, radio, and instrumentation systems that support Air Force pilot training to meet current and future customer needs. The responsibilities include leading efforts to establish requirements, define solutions, plan, implement, test, and sustain communication systems.
  • The Communications Engineer must be familiar with a variety of devices including Cisco, Juniper, Nokia, Space X, Satellite MEO, NSA Type 1, FIPS encryption devices, and network management systems. Experience with aircraft air to ground instrumentation and UHF/VHF radios is preferred.
  • The Communications Engineer is responsible for working in a team to sustain, implement, and upgrade communication and instrumentation. The position does require travel to remote deployment locations to set up, configure, and maintain equipment for up to a two week period.
  • Other duties as required.


Education and Experience :
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science or an equivalent degree from an ABET accredited engineering program is preferred. Cisco, Juniper, and Comp TIA+ certifications and relevant experience may be substituted for a degree but will result in a position classification of Communications Field Engineer.
  • Experience with CISCO Routers and Switches including knowledge of OSPF, GRE, PIM, IP multicast, layer 2 tunnels, link encryption and ACS.
  • Experience with Juniper switches and firewalls that support an MPLS transport service.
  • Experience with broadband radio technology, to include 5G cellular and satellite communications services such as Space X and MEO solutions.
  • Experience with UHF/VHF ground to air radios and voice switching systems, specifically from Collins Aerospace and Compunetix manufacturers.
  • Use of network management tools to provision, debug, monitor, and recover network links, nodes, and endpoints.
  • Experience with multicast data, video encoding/decoding, video distribution, and VoIP systems is necessary in this position.
  • Experience with classified network design and transport of data through NSA Type 1 encryption devices.
  • Excellent written skills and network documentation skills; Visio experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of good installation practices using telecommunication standards (TIA).
  • Ability to develop documentation and training to transition networks from engineering to operations staff, including operating guidelines to insure network availability.
  • Highly skilled in the use of a PC and Microsoft Office. Ability to use the Internet and other commonly used electronic communication tools. Proper English grammar, usage, spelling and punctuation.
  • Troubleshoot and effectively resolve system issues that involved working with technicians and vendors.
  • Support development of technical proposals and provide comments on technical content and level of effort of the proposed scope of work.
  • Serve as an interface and liaison with customers at all levels from quotation to final design and test activities, design reviews, and technical working group meetings to comply with requirements and specifications

Work Environment, Physical and Mental Demands:

Duties are performed both indoors and outdoors. Outdoor duties may be performed on ladders, roofs, towers, and platforms. Traveling to Range locations which involves exposure to extreme outdoor weather conditions for prolonged periods.
