ORGANIZATION SUMMARY STATEMENT:
The University of Maryland's Applied Research Lab for Intelligence and Security (ARLIS) is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Systems Engineer to support cutting-edge research projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in cloud computing, particularly with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure, as well as a solid understanding of high-performance computing (HPC) environments and containerization technologies. This role is pivotal in enabling researchers to efficiently and securely conduct their work in a state-of-the-art technological environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Design and Maintain Enterprise Systems – Apply proven systems engineering expertise to develop, optimize, and maintain enterprise-level infrastructure.
•Manage Linux Environments – Oversee Linux administration, including scripting and automation, to ensure system efficiency and reliability.
•Implement and Support Infrastructure – Deploy and manage virtualization, cloud solutions, and high-performance computing (HPC) environments to support organizational needs.
•Enhance Security and Incident Response – Monitor security threats, implement proactive defenses, and respond effectively to incidents.
•Collaborate and Problem-Solve – Work closely with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot complex technical challenges and drive solutions.
•Communicate Across Teams – Effectively convey technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring alignment and understanding.

Must be able to obtain a U.S. security clearance. If selected, you must meet the requirements for access to classified information and will be subject to a government security clearance investigation that includes criminal and credit history checks, as well as verification of U.S. citizenship, birth, education, employment, and military history.

PREFERENCES:
•Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
•Relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert) are a plus.
•Firewall and network encryption experience
•AWS/Azure cloud platforms
•Electrical engineering background
•Enterprise networking expertise
•Strong understanding of network and security protocols, policies, and standards.
•Experience in network automation through scripting or programming.
•Active TS/SCI clearance

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Sedentary work performed in a normal office environment; exerts up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Ability to attend meetings both on and off campus. Spending long hours in front of a computer screen. Must be able to be in the office 5 days a week

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS: NA

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Six (6) years of professional responsible experience planning, executing, and delivering information technology systems or infrastructure.

Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education. Knowledge of server and workstation hardware and operating systems, hypervisors, and associated systems management, monitoring, and security software
Knowledge of storage hardware (arrays, HDDs/flash, interfaces/HBAs/NICs, SANs, NAS devices, etc.) and associated systems management, monitoring, file systems, and security software.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Skill in the use of Google Office Suite.
Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.
Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service and sensitivity to a culturally and ethnically diverse community.
