CTEC develops and delivers innovative customer-centric technologies and solutions that facilitate the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).
Summary:
The Solutions Architect is the principal architect of large and complex hardware, software, database, networking, and/or telecommunication solutions. This role involves determining Laboratory-wide requirements and incorporating these into solutions that may be commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) or internally developed software and hardware. Responsibilities may include project management for implementing complex solutions, oversight of project documentation, marketing, training, budget, schedules, resource utilization, and benefits realization on complex solutions projects.
The Solutions Architect has broad expertise or unique knowledge, using skills to develop objectives and principles and achieve goals creatively and effectively. This role develops advanced concepts, techniques, and standards based on professional principles and theories and is viewed as an expert in the field within the Laboratory. The Solutions Architect works on unusually significant, unique, or complex issues, providing highly creative solutions where analysis of situations or data requires an evaluation of intangibles. This role impacts the success of future concepts, products, or technologies and works under consultative direction toward predetermined long-range targets. Assignments are often self-initiated, and the role is virtually self-supervisory, using independent judgment to determine the course of action to accomplish objectives with wide latitude in methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
Education: This position typically requires a minimum of 15 to 20+ years of related experience. At this level, postgraduate coursework may be expected.
Duties & Responsibilities:
• Analyze existing on-prem ODS architecture, data models, access controls, and integration processes to understand dependencies and potential migration challenges.
• Assess various cloud service providers and platforms to determine which are best suited to LANL’s operational and technical requirements.
• Design a scalable, secure, and efficient architecture for the cloud-based ODS, incorporating the best industry data storage, integration, and access practices.
• Identify and implement measures to maintain data security, privacy, and regulatory compliance throughout the migration and in the new cloud environment.
• Develop a plan to migrate data from the current database to the cloud, ensuring data integrity and minimal downtime.
• Recommend strategies for optimizing the performance and scalability of the new cloud-based ODS to meet current and future needs.
• Oversee project documentation, marketing, training, budget, schedules, resource utilization, and benefits realization on complex solutions projects.
Skills & Work Experience:
• Seasoned Senior Data Architect with 15+ years of experience in data architecture, modernization, cloud-based data solutions, and management.
• Expertise in designing scalable, efficient data architectures and operational data stores (ODS), both on-premises and cloud-based solutions.
• Deep knowledge of cloud platforms and their respective database services, storage solutions, and architecture best practices regardless of the cloud provider.
• Proven ability to design and execute complex data migration strategies, ensuring data integrity, security, and minimal downtime.
• Expertise in system performance tuning and database optimization, ensuring scalability and efficiency in high-transactional environments.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with technical teams, stakeholders, and leadership.
• Technical proficiency in key database technologies – AWS, Azure, Oracle Exadata, Oracle SQL, SQL.
Preferred:
• Postgraduate coursework in a related field.
• Experience with project management in implementing complex solutions.
• Familiarity with regulatory compliance and data security measures in cloud environments.
