Description

SAIC is seeking a highly skilled HPC Linux Subject Matter Expert (SME) to provide High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Linux support for laboratory environments to join our team remotely and provide part-time support for one of our programs supporting the FDA CDER Scientific Computing Program.

The ideal candidate will have expertise in managing and optimizing Linux-based HPC clusters, troubleshooting complex computational environments, and supporting researchers and scientists in achieving their project goals.

The role requires a proactive individual who can collaborate with technical teams, assist in HPC system performance optimization, and ensure smooth operation of Linux-based systems for scientific computing workloads.

Key Responsibilities
  • Administer, monitor, and optimize HPC clusters, including job schedulers.
  • Ensure system availability, reliability, and scalability to meet laboratory computing needs.
  • Develop and maintain scripts and tools to streamline HPC operations.
  • Configure, troubleshoot, and maintain Linux servers and workstations supporting laboratory research.
  • Perform software installations, system updates, and security patching for Linux systems.
  • Manage storage solutions, networking configurations, and shared file systems.
  • Assist researchers, scientists, and engineers with running computational workloads, debugging software, and optimizing workflows.
  • Offer guidance and training to end-users on HPC best practices, job scripting, and Linux tools.
  • Implement monitoring tools to identify and resolve performance bottlenecks.
  • Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, and network issues related to HPC and Linux systems.
  • Evaluate new technologies to enhance HPC and Linux capabilities.
  • Document system configuration, processes and troubleshooting guides for internal use.

Qualifications

Required Skills & Experience:

Active Public Trust clearance is required.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in Linux systems administration and HPC environments.
  • 10 years of overall IT experience
  • Expertise with job scheduling systems.
  • Experience with Linux-based file systems, storage solutions, and networking protocols.
  • Proficiency in shell scripting and at least one programming language (e.g. Python, Bash, Perl).
  • Familiarity with containerization tools.
  • Knowledge of security best practices and compliance in computational environments.
  • Understanding of scientific workflows and applications commonly used in research labs.

Preferred Skills:
  • Prior experience with GPU acceleration technologies.
  • Knowledge of configuration management tools.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for interacting with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Self-starter with a commitment to continuous learning and improvement.
  • Understanding of scientific workflows and applications commonly used in research labs.

Target salary range: $120,001 - $160,000. The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for this position based on experience and other factors.
