Job Summary
Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) supports the effective and timely development and operation of national security systems through scientific research and the application of advanced technologies. PSL has more than 150 specialized laboratories used to test, analyze, and troubleshoot virtually every aspect of rocket and satellite system design, development, construction, deployment, and operation. The diverse expertise of the laboratories' technical staff allows PSL to stay abreast of new technological developments and program support issues associated with rapidly evolving space systems.
Within PSL, and the Space Materials Laboratory, the Material Science Department provides real time support and R&D to the US Government. Many times this requires novel testing that will not damage flight hardware. We are looking for a Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) Section Manager to lead the research and customer support activities in the technology area of nondestructive evaluation which include but are not limited to X-ray radiography, ultrasonic testing, eddy current measurements, thermography, SEM, EDS, XRD, and shearography .

Work Model

What You'll Be Doing
- Conduct staff performance reviews and other personnel management functions such as managing team resources and needs, providing career development and mentoring, and recommending personnel staffing requests
- Mentor section staff both in technical and career growth
- Be the department's focal point for program office inquiries for current and future tasking involving nondestructive evaluation. Some requests may be short in nature.
- Pursue opportunities for additional , expanded, and new tasking for staff and identify appropriate personnel to perform the work
- Lead and participate in research activities to develop novel and unique NDE techniques that can solve complex problems for the customer
- Understand customer problems and issues and turn them into tasks that can be supported by Aerospace capabilities at large, including cross Engineering Technology Group (ETG) and external company teaming.
- Delivers results, lead communications, and engages with impact with personnel within PSL and between organizations within ETG
What You Need to be Successful
Minimum Requirements for the Manager - Materials Science :
- PhD degree in a STEM field is required
- A minimum of (8) years of applicable professional industry experience is required
- Strong knowledge of various NDE principles and structural materials
- Experience in leading multidisciplinary research involving NDE and structural materials
- Evidence of peer-reviewed journal publications in relevant technical areas
- Demonstrated team leadership, mentorship activities, customer responsiveness, creativity in problem solving and addressing teaming/interpersonal challenges
- Strong people management, interpersonal, and networking skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to present methods and results effectively in briefings, formal reports, and informal communications
- Exceptional time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple concurrent projectsand personnel
- Willing to travel occasionally to work location or customer site/domestically/internationally approximately 2 5% .
- This position requires ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance
How You Can Stand Out
It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:
- Subject matter expertise in materials science and structural materials (Composites, Metals, Ceramics)
- Experience with the Intelligence Community
- ASNT certifications in one or more NDT methods
- A current and active Secret or TS/SCI security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government is strongly preferred. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance
