The Vice President, Strategic Operations will manage and oversee strategic planning and partnerships, marketing and communications, and customer and stakeholder relations for the BAE Systems, Inc. Space & Missions Systems (SMS) sector. While leading the Strategic Operations team, the Vice President will serve as chief strategy officer, leading the development of a strategy to advance SMS with its customers and stakeholders, and set a shared path for the future. This position is critical to maintaining the sector's reputation for high integrity, enhancing strategic positioning in the industry, and increasing stakeholder understanding of the sector and its business objectives.

The Strategic Operations (StratOps) Strategic Capabilities Unit, consists of Washington DC Operations, Marketing & Communications and Strategic Development. The StratOps team promotes and elevates the business within our markets, works with customers and industry to influence and drive growth and facilitate collaboration across the business enterprise to increase opportunities.

What You'll Do:
  • Serve as a key member of the SMS Executive Leadership Team (ELT); ability to demonstrate a First Team mindset - prioritizing support of fellow leaders as top priority. Building trusting relationships with the ELT is the top leadership priority.
  • Lead the creation and execution of the SMS sector strategy.
  • In partnership with the SMS Strategic Business Units (SBUs), lead development and expansion of customer and stakeholder relationships to shape business opportunities.
  • Collaborate with BAE Systems, Inc. Executive Leadership, Strategy & Corporate Development, Communications, and Government Relations organizations to align sector strategies, business development actions, and stakeholder engagements with overall BAE Systems, Inc. strategies.
  • Establish, maintain and direct the SMS government affairs agenda, in coordination with the BAE Systems, Inc. Government Relations organization. The agenda will focus on engaging policy makers to advance the interests of the SMS sector.
  • Lead SMS marketing and communications team, which includes media relations, employee communications, integrated marketing campaigns, tradeshows, and STEM outreach.
  • Leverage SMS marketing and communications to strategically position the sector in key markets and to increase awareness of mission capabilities.
  • Lead strategic intelligence capabilities of the sector, leveraging talent across BAE Systems, Inc. to understand the broader aerospace and defense market.
  • Understand the substantive policy issues associated with the Aerospace and Defense industry and develop and execute advocacy initiatives.
  • Strategically manage the sector's involvement in industry and trade associations and manage the staff, budget and outside consultants.
  • Contribute to the BAE Systems, Inc. Political Action Committee process.
  • Partner with SMS business and corporate units to proactively shape the public policy and business development agenda and to maximize SMS' interest.
  • Provide guidance to SBUs and Strategic Capabilities Units in the development and execution of their strategic plans.
  • Provide to senior corporate executive's information, advice, and perspectives concerning policies, trends and activities within the Federal, State and Local government and within key customer organizations.
  • Facilitate the effective and strategic involvement of the SMS executive team and maintain strong communication between the various business units and the external communications office the sector.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working four days each normally scheduled week in the primary work location. Travel and local commute between company campuses and other possible non-company locations may be required.

Working Conditions:
  • Work is performed in an office environment, laboratory, cleanroom, or production floor.


Required Education, Experience, & Skills
  • BS/BA in related field plus 15 years or more related experience.
  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master's Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • 15 or more years' experience in the government relations arena either as a government executive with a major defense company or trade association, a long-term Congressional staffer involved with defense matters, or as a senior public servant in a relevant government department or agency. Specific experience in the Defense industry is required, and commercial experience is highly preferred.
  • Significant political acumen and be a part of the Washington community.
  • Proven ability to align the sector's business plan with emerging political and defense trends and position the sector to win new business.
  • An ability to quickly grasp the legislative and regulatory issues facing the industries in which the sector operates and to position the sector effectively to address these issues, with a keen eye on opportunities for business development with customers.
  • An extensive knowledge of US federal appropriations and policy making processes, including executive agencies, the White House, Senate and House, as well as think tanks and associations and an understanding of how these processes impact the sector's business development agenda.
  • Experience with marketing and communications activities, to include media relations, employee communications, integrated marketing campaigns, & tradeshows preferred.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, leadership ability, initiative and creativity, and a high degree of judgment while working within an environment that places a premium on collaboration and teamwork; solid coalition building skills.
  • The ability to work and be an integral part of an action-oriented, decision-making working environment.
  • Experience in managing in matrix environment and developing professionals, staff members and consultants effectively, as well as appropriately advising/ influencing senior-level corporate executives.
  • Ability to manage fast paced dynamic Washington office, as well as the Marketing & Communications team that is mostly located in Broomfield, Colorado.

A security clearance or access with Polygraph is not required to be eligible for this position. However, the applicant must be willing and eligible for submission, depending on program requirements, after an offer is accepted and must be able to maintain the applicable clearance/access.

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills
  • Current, active TS/SCI preferred.
