Job Summary

We are currently seeking a Senior-Level Data Scientist. This position located in Columbus, OH. This job is contingent on contract (anticipated March 2025).

Battelle's Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosives (CBRNE) Defense business line, in our National Security business unit, is currently seeking persons with knowledge of physical/mathematical phenomena and programming savvy. The Hazard Modeling Team within CBRNE Defense provides its customers with technical analyses as well as modeling capabilities to inform their preparedness and response planning efforts to mitigate risk to the United States or their company. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to make this Nation and Battelle's clients safer and better prepared.

Responsibilities

• Lead model development and data analysis activities related to wildfire spread (or other fire risks), mitigation, and risk analysis.
• Serve as a subject matter expert in the fields of wildfire spread and wildfire risk modeling, leveraging skills in probabilistic risk analysis, and mathematical modeling.
• Develop technical, schedule, and budget plans for moderately-sized tasks to accomplish project objectives.
• Direct the technical activities of a small team of developers to achieve project milestones on schedule and within budget.
• Act as the point of contact for external clients in this subject area.
• Coordinate reporting of modeling methodology, results, and quality assurance.
• Present results and write reports for customers, stakeholders, and executive level decision makers.
• Mentor and develop junior team members.

Key Qualifications

• PhD with at 5+ years of experience (or MS with 7+ years of experience) in wildfire modeling, wildfire risk analysis, mathematics, mathematical modeling, statistical analysis, data science, or related field.
• At least 3 years of experience managing projects with proven ability to meet project deadlines on schedule and within budget.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills of scientific, technical data to non-technical and semi-technical audiences.
• Expert knowledge of advanced statistics and probability.
• Must be a U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret DoD clearance.
• Ability to travel domestically up to 10%.
• Demonstrated experience mentoring junior staff.
• Ability to learn and understand new programing languages and mathematical concepts.

Preferred Qualifications

• At least 3 years of experience developing models and methods that are used to inform risk assessments.
• Understanding of software development best practices.
• Experience using object-oriented programming languages (e.g., C++, C#, Python, or similar).
• Experience with advanced data analysis techniques, such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, or natural language processing.
• Experience performing risk assessments and managing projects for government contracts.
• Experience writing technical proposals.
• Record of peer-reviewed publications and/or major conference presentations in the areas of wildfire spread modeling and wildfire risk assessment.
