GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:
The Machinist/Engineering Technician Intern is a learning position. The position is open only to high school students.
The intern will work on non-flex Fridays and attend school on the other days. Interns will rotate through various labs observing and working alongside experienced technicians gaining hands-on experience in machining and engineering. This position will work with a more experienced Machinist/ Engineering Technician as he/she learns the procedures related to the labs. All work will be under oversight of the supervisor or a more experienced technician.Work will be checked in progress and technical accuracy reviewed on completion.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Learn and practice the application of basic machining principles, theories, and concepts.
- Assist with standard practices and procedures.
- Assist with machining simple hardware and specimens in noncritical materials.
- Assist with machine operation on CNC machinery.
- Assist with material characterization tests and related activities
- Assist with assembly, test, and checkout of electromechanical devices that require adherence to strict standards and processes.
- Assist with recording techniques and/or procedures utilized to produce specimens/hardware.
- Keep work area organized - apply 6S principles to assigned areas and actively assist shop supervisor in shop-wide implementation.
Other Job Functions:
- Learn to work with shop equipment including lathe, mills, grinders, and measuring tools.
- Assist with the interpretation of blueprints, sketches, and verbal instructions.
- Maintain shop equipment and cleanliness of shop area.
- Maintain safe conditions in work area.
- Perform other duties as required by supervisor.

Experience and Skills
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Planning and Organization - Systematically identifies issues to be addressed and plans a course of action for self and others to ensure the accomplishment of specific objectives.
- Attention to detail - Utilizes established monitoring system, records data accurately and in a timely manner, and ensures accuracy of data.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- U.S. citizen with ability to obtain and maintain Secret Security Clearance
- Must be 16 years of age or older
- Currently enrolled in high school
- Successfully completed two years of high school
- Recommended by technical/vocational school instructor
- Mechanical aptitude
- Strong math skills.
WORK ENVIROMENT / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position involves work in a high bay area using a variety of machining apparatus. The use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required including:
- Safety glasses
- Hearing protection (varies based on tasks)
- Safety shoes
- Respirator as needed.
- Current tetanus shot required.
In performing the work for this position, the technician must be able to:
- Sit for extended periods of time without being able to leave the work area.
- Stand for extended periods of time without being able to leave the work area.
- Climb ladders and stairs in performing the work.
- Walk for reasonable distances in performing the work.
- Lift / carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs. in performing the work.
- Pull or push objects weighing up to 50 lbs. in performing the work.
- Grasp objects utilizing the fingers (fine motor manipulation).
- Reach for objects above the head or below the waist.
- Stoop or crouch by bending at the waist or by bending the legs.
- Withstand exposure to constant or intermittent high noise levels.
