An organization within Northrop Grumman's Payload and Ground Systems (PGS) division, Mission Enabling Products (MEP), the Deployables Operating Unit (DOU) is a leading designer and producer of deployable structural systems and mechanisms, solar arrays, and deployable antennas/reflectors. Our products are on virtually every U. S. satellite built in the last 20 years.

We are seeking an Engineering Manager 3 to support our Deployables Operating Unit (DOU) and may be located in either Goleta, or Oxnard, CA.

Overview

Reporting to the DOU Director of Engineering, the Engineering Manager 3 will lead several engineering functions for the Deployables Operating Unit, including ground equipment and tooling design, structural and thermal analysis, test processes, materials and process engineering, and CM/DM. As a key strategic member of the Northrop Grumman MEP-Deployables leadership team, they are responsible for the planning, standardizing, implementing and enhancing methods that support the value stream organization (VSO) and its objectives.

Through collaboration with Engineering product team leads and other functional managers, the Engineering Manager is responsible for resource management and prioritization to provide prompt response and situational resolutions to meet all VSO goals and objectives.

Role and Responsibilities:
  • Accountable to the Director of Engineering, Deployables Operating Unit, for meeting the Engineering safety, quality, delivery and cost expectations of internal and external customers within product value streams and engineering disciplines. Ensures plans are developed and executed to meet internal and external customer requirements.
  • Maintain staffing forecasts and engineering resources necessary to meet customer demands. Balance program priorities and negotiate conflicts. Recruit, hire, and evaluate potential talent. Define critical skill gaps and take actions to fill them.
  • Provide Engineering leadership and own employee development, training, goal setting, performance evaluation, and mentoring.
  • Identify, develop, and implement improved engineering processes, including analysis checklists, model reviews, and gate reviews. Support Digital Transformation efforts including PLM and CAD transitions to Teamcenter/NX, CM policy and process commonality, BOM management tools, and DOORS usage.
  • In coordination with the Engineering Director, the Engineering Manager will lead and review proposal and new business efforts that involve the delegated Engineering disciplines, including task definition, basis-of-estimates (BoE), schedule development, and risk assessment.
  • Establish and maintain metrics that provide real-time visibility to measure, monitor, and control process performance, including key inputs, outputs, and early warning event triggers.
  • Assist Engineering Director on integration of the Goleta and Oxnard sites and improving overall engineering execution. Lead the delegated Engineering disciplines in design for manufacturability, process adherence, and production builds.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with Operations, Program Management, and Business Support Functions to achieve product and site goals via sharing of resources, tools, equipment, processes, etc.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering and 9 years of relevant work experience, including at least 5 years of experience in a leadership role with direct reports; OR a Master's degree and 7 years' experience
  • Demonstrated success leading teams/and or organizations to achieve a common goal
  • Proven track record of leading managers as direct reports of various disciplines and lead multi-disciplined team to reach common goals and objectives
  • Ability to provide technical communication and coordination with senior leadership
  • Experience with budget and cost management. Ability to organize and manage multiple products/programs with the focus on delivering within cost and on schedule
  • Combination of industry knowledge, leadership skills, management expertise and in-depth knowledge of the design engineering process. Strong knowledge in engineering systems and processes such as CAD, FEA, and GD&T
  • Detailed knowledge of mechanical design, structures, mechanisms, release and drive actuators, and material selection
  • Proven ability to perform problem analysis and resolution using lean and continuous improvement tools and tactics to satisfy customer and business needs
  • Requires knowledge and experience with implementation and execution of process standards, systems, processes, and business tools focused on engineering and technical risk management identification and mitigation
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to regularly travel between the Oxnard and Goleta sites; and travel as needed to support customers
  • US Citizenship required

Preferred Qualifications:
  • MS in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
  • Experience with space deployable systems
  • Active Security Clearance
Salary Range: $170,000 - $255,000
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
