Computer Operator Job Description
Computer Operators are responsible for the running of all computer operations. They monitor, maintain and controls the operation of the mainframe hardware and software. The operator starts and stops system tasks, monitors the system consoles for unusual conditions, and works with the system programming and production control staff to ensure the health and normal operation of the systems. They work in a variety of different industries, the Command Center is a 24x7 shop and in some cases, they may work onsite or remotely and must be flexible.

Roles and Responsibilities of Computer Operator:
The roles and responsibilities of a computer operator included, but are not limited to:
- Monitor z/OS Master Consoles in Production, Development and Test environments responding and or reply to messages, using MVS, JES2 commands notify the appropriate personnel via email, phone if action is needed.
- Works with the system programming and production control staff to ensure the health and normal operation of the system.
- The operator starts and stops system tasks as requested.
- Maintaining operations by monitoring error messages and making proper adjustments.
- Maintaining incident logs for any issues that arise.
- Making appropriate changes to (SOP) documentation, as and when needed.
- Perform initial level of troubleshooting.
- Maintaining client confidence and protecting operations by keeping sensitive information confidential.
- Respond to incoming telephone calls and mail inquiries from both internal and external customers regarding computer-related problems.
- Participate in Disaster Recovery testing on an annual basis.
- Must be capable of working efficiently with minimal supervision.
- Should have strong communication skills and be able to follow directions clearly.
- In some cases, you may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays depending on operational requirements. Must be flexible.
- Must be able to work with others, contribute to team efforts and have a positive attitude.
- IPL (initial program load) experience in loading of the operating system into the computer's main memory from the HMC console.
- Utilize OMEGAMON to monitor and manage the performance and availability of individual z/OS systems.
- Use MVS system commands to display device status and channel paths, and display.
- Familiar with Control-O, a console automation product.
- Familiar with Control-M Enterprise IT Job Scheduling and Workload Automation
- Familiar with monitoring tools such as Omegamon SYSVIEW, SMF, Mainview
- Experience working with Incident, Change & Problem Management reporting tool such as ServiceNow for tracking and resolving IT issues.
- Working knowledge of JES2, SDSF, TSO, CICS, ISPF, DB2, JCL, SYSLOG, DLM Virtual Tape Management System
- Must be able to pass background check.
Qualifications
Skills and education required:
The following education and skills are either required or desirable in a candidate:
- Although it is not essential, a degree in Information Systems is strongly preferred.
- Must have at least 5+ years of experience working with computers and various different systems.
- Must be able to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of computer functions.
- Must have both analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to troubleshoot any computer problems that could arise.
- Time management skills are essential as you need to ensure all request, ServiceNow tickets and queries are completed on time.
