Description
SAIC has an opening for a Research Scientist. This is a remote position that can be worked from any location in the U.S.
Contribute to the NRL METOC R&D program by creating software to support the development of Navy Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) and Aerosol models to support Navy and Marine Corps operational planning and mission execution around the world.

Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelors and two (2) years or more related experience. MS in Meteorology or related Physical Sciences field.

Target salary range: $80,001 - $120,000. The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for this position based on experience and other factors.

Tasks include:
PyroCb Prediction:
- Lead developer for incorporating NRL's pyrocumulonimbus (PyroCb) prediction model into GeoIPS to facilitate it being run in near-realtime.
- Develop the means to visualize the probability of PyroCb development over wildfire events and an alternate means of PyroCb visualization.
- Adjust the data reading and filtering steps to work better in the near-realtime processing environment, incorporating new fire data sources into the processing, and simplifying the product presentation to improve its usability.
GeoIPS development:
- Contributed to developing GeoIPS), NRL's Python-based satellite data processing system.
- Develop new data readers and updating plugins to work with new versions of the core GeoIPS codebase.
- Writing documentation for some parts of the core GeoIPS functionality.
NAAPS Reanalysis:
- Convert NAVGEM files into NAAPS-readable formats and validate the quality of the output to support aerosol reanalysis.
Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelors and two (2) years or more related experience. MS in Meteorology or related Physical Sciences field.
2 years of experience with:
- Supporting Navy METOC R&D programs in Integrated fire weather prediction system (PyroCb) and satellite data processing systems.
- Experience with Python, Numpy, SciPy, Matplotlib, Perl, C, Java, Linux/Unix, Windows, LabVIEW, & Fortran.
DESIRED:
- 1-2 years of thunderstorm-related R&D.
CLEARANCE:
- Active Secret security clearance; Final Secret with NATO Secret to full access to government IT systems.
- U.S. citizenship required
