Senior DevOps Engineer

Founded in 1999 in the beautiful Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee, Cadre5 provides innovative technical solutions to our customers locally and nationally. Our Cadre5 Lab Partners division has partnered with Research IT Infrastructure group in the Research Computing division of the Information Technology Services Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to recruit a qualified Senior DevOps Engineer.

ORNL delivers scientific discoveries and technical breakthroughs needed to realize solutions in energy and national security and provides economic benefit to the nation. This premier research institution located near Knoxville in Oak Ridge, TN, addresses national needs through impactful research and world-leading research centers.

This is a full-time, permanent position that follows a hybrid working model.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Gathering user requirements, designing, and developing strategic solutions for the development and deployment of key applications developed by ORNL researchers
  • Understanding and evaluating existing development and deployment technologies in order to identify potential strategies for improving efficiency and long-term maintainability
  • Evaluating and documenting new tools to pitch to the rest of the team, with an eye toward improved service and delivery.
  • Diagnose and debug customer workloads, CI/CD pipelines, and deployment procedures in order to implement solutions to optimize performance and scalability both on-premises and in the cloud.
  • Work with researchers and developers to configure complex pipelines to streamline multiple code repositories for automated deployments/upgrades, and work with others across the organization to ensure that we are delivering secure solutions in compliance with Internal Operating Procedures.

Basic Qualifications:
  • A BS in a technical, scientific, business, or related field of study and a minimum of eight (8) to twelve (12) years of relevant professional experience is required for consideration. An overall combination of equivalent education and experience may be considered.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience managing UNIX/Linux Systems.
  • At least one (1) year of experience utilizing Terraform and Ansible
  • Experience with configuring and deploying OpenStack instances
  • Experience utilizing configuration management and automation tools in GitLab for CI/CD
  • Moderate fluency in at least one scripting language such as Bash, Python, Go or equivalent.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance is required. This requires US Citizenship.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experiencing building and managing Kubernetes infrastructure in a production environment.
  • Experience managing virtual infrastructure on public clouds (AWS, Azure, GCP, etc).
  • Strong knowledge of multiple operating systems.
  • Experience with performance and diagnostic tools for benchmarking, analysis and tuning of systems, networking, and storage.
  • Previous experience working in a government, scientific, or other highly technical environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills suitable for user support and ability to work well with peers.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance complex research and security requirements.
  • Technical documentation skills, including ability to prepare simple documentation web pages.
  • RHSA, VCP, AWS Certified DevOps Engineer.
