A Machinist is responsible for operating and maintaining various machine tools to produce precision parts and components. They interpret engineering drawings, set up machines, and utilize tools such as lathes, mills, and grinders to shape and finish materials. Machinists work with a variety of metals and plastics, monitor machine performance, and make adjustments as needed. They ensure adherence to specifications, perform quality checks, and may collaborate with engineers or designers on complex projects. The role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and knowledge of machining principles and techniques.

Estimated Starting Salary Range for Machinist: Pay commensurate with experience.

Machinist Responsibilities Include:
  • Fabricates metal parts by operating mechanical equipment.
  • Operates one or more types of machines in order to meet production demands.
  • Sets and adjusts machine settings as necessary.
  • Reads and interprets diagrams and blueprints to select, position, and secure machinery to ensure proper dimensions and tolerance levels of the finished product.
  • Complete tasks accurately according to customer specifications.
  • Plans machining by studying work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, reference planes, location of surfaces, machining parameters, interpreting geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T).
  • Setting tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches; calculating requirements, including basic math, geometry, and trigonometry; proving part programs.
  • Sets-up mills and lathes by installing and adjusting three- and four-jaw chucks, tools, attachments, collets, bushings, cams, gears, stops, and stock pushers; and indicating vices.
  • Loads feed mechanism by lifting stock into position.
  • Verifies settings by measuring positions, first-run part, and sample work pieces; adhering to international standards.
  • Maintains specifications by observing drilling, grooving, and cutting, including turning, facing, knurling and thread chasing operations; taking measurements; detecting malfunctions; troubleshooting processes; adjusting controls; replacing worn tools; adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes.
  • Maintains safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations.
  • Maintains equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs.
  • Maintains continuity among work shifts by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
  • Documents actions by completing production and quality logs.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in education opportunities.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Machinist Experience, Education, Skills, Abilities requested:
  • Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and 0-2 years of experience required.
  • Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal
  • Demonstrates the ability to operate a machine as instructed and the ability to learn and perform the functions required.
  • Ability to inspect parts and be able to edit offsets as required.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings/blueprints, technical data and related specifications.
  • Exhibit good attendance, a good attitude and the ability to work well with others.
  • Must be eligible to work on programs subject to ITAR Regulations. Therefore, candidates must be a U.S. Citizen or a U.S. Permanent Resident ('Green Card').
