The Fuels Supervisor l is tasked with the strategic planning of fuel requirements in support of Amentum's role on the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) for the United States Antarctic Program (USAP). This position entails the management of fuel bulk tank farms, airfield fuel pits, heliport operations, fuel truck deliveries, and vessel operations. Additionally, the Fuels Supervisor oversees fuel laboratory and quality assurance processes, as well as the maintenance and repair activities associated with fuel operations and equipment. Furthermore, the individual is responsible for hiring, supervising, and training all on-site fuel personnel to ensure safe and efficient operations.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Implement and maintain a safe workplace program, safety programs, training schedules, and standard operating procedures to always ensure that safety remains the highest priority.
  • Coordinate fuels support at McMurdo, South Pole, Marble Point, Palmer stations, and deep field sites by interfacing with the National Science Foundation (NSF), military personnel, Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) representatives, and other contractors as necessary.
  • Train and orient subordinate employees on their performance, documentation, and activities that impact the achievement of seasonal milestones.
  • Manage the daily and weekly schedule of the Fuels Department by assigning tasks, ensuring that McMurdo and South Pole Stations fuel milestones are met safely and on time, and adjusting the schedule to accommodate changing plans and priorities.
  • Handle confidential matters according to management policies.
  • Review plans and procedures annually and submit amendments for approval.
  • Continuously assess risks and communicate with the operations manager, Leidos on-ice management, and Safety on-ice management regarding risk issues.
  • Perform quality assurance checks to ensure compliance with established procedures, as well as adherence to American Petroleum Institute (API) standards, American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) guidelines, MIL-STD-3004-1B, MIL-STD-1518E, T.O. 42B, and the Antarctic Conservation Act and its related policies.
  • Develop and maintain inventory control systems for materials, consumables, tools, and assets to ensure they are serviceable.
  • Conduct routine preventative maintenance and schedule repairs for all fuel tanks and department equipment, tracking all equipment labor in MAXIMO.
  • Provide pertinent fuels information and data as requested, including studies specific to situational requirements or management inquiries.
  • Assist in preparing the annual labor and material budgets for the McMurdo, South Pole, Marble Point, and Palmer Station fuels work centers. Initiate and submit annual resupply requisitions to align with planned expenditures.
  • Hiring of personnel as funded in the Annual Program Plan, or as revised during the operating year.
  • Provide short- and long-term fuel forecasts that inform biennial replenishment planning, execution, and budgeting, and recommend fuel resupply quantities.


  • Track fuel receipts, transfers, and usage, providing weekly reports or as they occur. Confirm fuel receipts to the National Science Foundation (NSF) for payment purposes.
  • Oversee fuel testing and quality assurance, performing testing in accordance with MIL-STD-3004-1B & MIL-STD-1518E. Report all discrepancies and resolve fuel quality issues and questions.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining short-term and long-term plans for USAP fuel systems infrastructure, maintenance, and replacement, including budgeting and submitting statements of work for new project proposals, operations, and maintenance change orders as required.
  • Comply with all ASC environmental and quality assurance requirements, as well as health and safety regulations. Provide necessary documentation to these divisions to ensure adequate and legal reporting.
  • Ensure that all subordinate employees are trained and understand ASC environmental, quality assurance, health, and safety standards. Maintain documentation as necessary to satisfy these requirements.
  • Ensure that all personnel are trained and certified to safely perform their assigned tasks in compliance with approved methods and procedures related to fuels operations.
  • Identify and lead process improvement projects.
  • Contribute to the regular review of training programs, standard operating procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and other job materials.
  • Complete Environmental Incident Notification Forms (EINFs) and Incident Global Assessment Reports (IGARs) promptly and thoroughly.
  • Provide pre-season expectations, post-season evaluations, and coaching.
  • Keep track of inventory levels and request quotes from companies for fuel inventory items.
  • Provide input on the Annual Program Plan (APP) and Concept of Operations (ConOps).
  • Perform other duties as required.


Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses:

  • Six or more years of fuels experience with at least three years in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Must have a valid driver license.


Expected Skills and Competencies:

  • Proficiency in communicating professionally and respectfully, both orally and in writing, internally and externally, via email, radio, phone, in-person.
  • Strong computer skills including experience with MS Office products.
  • Experience and success in creating and implementing relevant safety training programs.
  • Successful experience effectively leading teams in a regularly changing environment to complete a wide variety of tasks
  • Proven decision-making ability and sound judgment to solve problems safely and effectively.


Preferred

  • Previous experience working in the Artic or Antarctic.
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field.
  • Working knowledge of Maximo.
  • Experience in forecasting and planning in fuels management


Physical and/or Other Requirements:

  • This role requires periodic deployment to Antarctica for extended periods.
  • When not deployed, this is a remote working position and the incumbent may work from home, or any suitable location within the continental United States (CONUS).
  • Successfully completion of the NSF's mandatory Medical and Dental examinations, as required by the NSF for clearance to deploy to Antarctica.


  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.
  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.

Salary Range: $75,000 - $92,000 annualized
