Duties
This position is located within TASMG Projects and may be extended or terminated at the discretion of the TASMG Commander.
JOB SUMMARY: The primary purpose of this position is to perform machining operations.
NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED. This is an excepted position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the Connecticut Army National Guard.
The major duties include, but are not limited to:
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside in areas that are usually noisy and dirty, and where there is a constant danger to the skin and eyes from flying metal chips and abrasive particles; skin irritation from contact with coolants, lubricants, and abrasive compounds; danger to fingers, hands, and other parts of the body from cutting tools, grinding wheels, rotating pieces, and moving parts of machines.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work requires standing, stooping, bending, and reaching. Grade 8 operators frequently handle, lift, and carry objects weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds). They are sometimes required to lift and move items weighing in excess of 23 kilograms (50 pounds) with the help of weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers.

GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Experience or training that has provided the candidate with a basic knowledge of machining processes. Must have the ability to use drill presses, shapers, planers and other types of associated machine tools.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: This position is covered by the medical monitoring program. Individual selected must undergo a preemployment physical examination prior to appointment. This position requires a security clearance (secret) which the applicant must possess or be able to obtain a clearance within one year of appointment.
STATEMENT OF DIFFERENCE: Individual selected at a lower level will be issued a Statement of Difference. Predicated upon qualifications, individual could be hired at the WG-10 grade. An individual selected for this position at the lower grade will progressively be advanced to WG-10 upon achievement of required qualifications without further competition.
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT: Training at the National Guard Professional Education Center (NGPEC) is a mandatory condition of employment, subject to availability of resources. NGB prescribed courses at NGPEC must be completed within 6 months of assignment to this position. Failure to complete course(s) may result in reassignment or termination of full-time employment unless extenuating circumstances preclude course attendance.

- Operates a variety of shop machines, including the engine lathe, milling machine, radial or sensitive drill press, grinding machine, bench lathe, bench grinder, shaper, planner, saws, horizontal and vertical boring mill, and jig boring machine.
- Assists with setting up, programming (CNC) using machine controller, CAD & CAM Software and operating machine tools such as lathes, vertical and horizontal, boring mills, bench, plain, or universal milling machines, shapers, planers, internal and external grinders, thread grinders, radial drills, jig borers, jig grinders, hobbing machines, thread grinders, gear generators, 3D printers, 3D Scanners, Laser engravers/cutters and numerically controlled machine tools.
- Collaborates with higher graded personnel on the planning and interpreting of blueprints, drawings, sketches, and specifications.
- Manufactures, repairs, tests, inspects, and reworks metal devices and parts used with and on aircraft and related aircraft maintenance equipment.
- Machines parts for instruments, armament, aircraft, equipment, etc.

- Experience or training performing machining operations on conventional and CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine tools to include aligning parts.
- Experience, education or training in the use of measuring instruments such as scales, micrometers, vernier calipers, height gages and various standard or preset snap, plug or ring gages.
- Experience demonstrating the ability to follow detailed oral or written instructions.
- Experience or training performing the full range of machining operations on most types of conventional or CNC machine tools and their various attachments.
- Experience or training in planning and lay out work from blueprints, worksheets and other drawings that may have missing or incorrect information.
- Experience demonstrating the skill in applying shop mathematics in establishing needed dimensions, such as those required for chasing threads or machining angular surfaces; locating and marking surfaces and angles to be machined.
- Experience demonstrating the skill in programming machining operations, setting up and operating CNC machine tools.
- Experience demonstrating knowledge of and ability to apply advanced shop mathematics such as geometric and trigonometric formulas to make computation for laying out work, machining pieces at unusual or compound angles, determining gear ratios pitch, angles and other similar exact or precision dimension.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge and skill in performing the full range of machining operations on most types of conventional or computer numerical controlled (CNC) machine tools and their various attachments.
- Knowledge of various metals and other materials; be able to plan and layout work from blueprints, work sheets, and drawings; have skill in determining work procedures, machine, tools, and equipment to use; have knowledge of mathematics related to machinist work; have skill in manufacturing entire items; and skill in using many types of precision instruments and equipment related to the machinist trade.
- Skill in planning and laying out work from blueprints, work sheets, and drawings that have missing or incorrect information.
- Skill in determining work procedures, machine tools, equipment, and attachments to be used; proper type and size of raw stock; sequence of machining operations; and the speeds and feeds necessary to attain the required finishes and tolerances.
- Knowledge of trade mathematics including plane geometry and the use of trigonometric functions, and machinist handbook formulas in establishing needed dimensions, such as those required for chasing threads or machining angular surfaces; locating and marking surfaces and angles to be machined, locating reference points, or performing other layout work necessary to facilitate accurate job setups on a variety of conventional and/or CNC machine tools.
- Skill in manufacturing an entire item, carrying out machining operations necessary for completion, and performing precision handwork such as filing, scraping and lapping to fit, assembling, and finishing machined parts.
- Skill in using many types of precision instruments and equipment such as vernier calipers, height gages, squares, protractors, inside, outside, and depth micrometers, surface gages, vee blocks, parallel bars, gage blocks, dial indicators, optical and mechanical comparators, and "go" and "no -go" thread, ring, bore, and plug gages to attain accurate dimensions and maintain tolerances.
- Knowledge of a wide range of manual welding processes involving oxyacetylene, oxyhydrogen, and other industrial gases, as well as applying knowledge of various manual arc-welding processes.
