Job Description:
• Assemble, install and repair pipes, fittings and fixtures of heating, water, and drainage systems, according to specifications and plumbing codes.
• Study plans and working drawings to determine work aids required and sequence of installations.
• Inspect structure to ascertain obstructions to be avoided to prevent weakening of structure resulting from installation of pipe.
• Locate and mark position of pipe and pipe connections and passage holes for pipes in walls and floors, using ruler, spirit level and plumb bob.
• Cut openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and pipe fittings, using hand tools and power tools.
• Cut and thread pipe, using pipe cutters, cutting torch, and pipe-threading machine
• Bend pipe to required angle by use of pipe-bending machine or by placing pipe over block and bending it by hand.
• Assemble and install valves, pipe fittings, and pipes composed of metals, such as steel, stainless steel, brass, and nonmetals, such as glass, vitrified clay, and plastic, using hand tools and power tools.
• Join pipe by use of screws, bolts, fittings, solder, plastic solvent, and calks joints.
• Fill pipe system with water or air and reads pressure gauges to determine whether system is leaking.
• Install and repair plumbing fixtures, such as sinks, commodes, bathtubs, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, and dishwashers.
• Repair plumbing by replacing washers in leaky faucets, mending burst pipes, and opening clogged drains.
• Weld holding fixtures to steel structural members.
• Use of industry specific hand tools, portable power tools and manually operated machine tools.
• Shaping, cutting, bending, fabricating, threading, fitting and assembling techniques.
• Per contract requirements, must be able to respond to urgent calls outside of regular working hours.
• Additional tasks and duties may be assigned.
Required Experience:
• Shipboard plumbing experience.
• Must have skill in the use accepted trade methods and techniques and in the use of tools and equipment of the plumbing trade.
• Basic understanding of industrial U.S. Navy ship repair activities, to include hot work operations, work in confined spaces, fire prevention, lock-out/tag-out, and damage control efforts.
• Understanding of U.S. Navy ship layout, configuration, control plates, placards, markings, and symbols.
• Knowledge of U.S. Navy plumbing equipment.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a confidential or higher security clearance, passport and base access credentials.
Desired Skills:
• Experience in shipboard plumbing support and ship repair requirements of Navy vessels.
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
• Experience with troubleshooting, determines the techniques to use and selects the proper materials.
• Possess knowledge of how various supply disposal and utility systems are installed and operate.
• Able to follows or refer to layout sheets, craft plans, floor plans, circuit schematics and descriptions, and manufacturers technical guidance.
• Ability to read technical manuals, policies, guidelines, and repair standards.
• Good verbal communication and report writing skills.
The physical job requirement involves, but is not limited to, walking, reaching, bending-over, concentration in the presence of noise, lifting items up to 50 lbs., and traversing narrow passageways, climbing ladders/stairs, and operating in confined spaces onboard naval vessels and barges and in buildings.
