Photonics Engineer, Mid
Key Role:
Join us as we use quantum information science for good in the federal government. Work closely with clients to understand their questions and needs and provide direct quantum support in their laboratory environment. Mentor and learn from teammates, run advanced experiments, study and evaluate complex data, and recommend changes and alternative solutions. Design and develop integrated photonic devices such as waveguides, including silicon, silicon nitride, and aluminum nitride, modulators, including thermo-optic and plasma dispersion-based, and detectors for chip-scale accelerometers and chip-to-chip RF time transfer. Interact with foundry partners to develop novel photonic devices and processes within standard Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semic ond uctor ( CMOS ) fabrication flows. Collaborate with world-leading multidisciplinary teams across the DoD, industry, and academia to integrate traditionally bulk and fiber optic systems to the chip-scale. Perform simulations using industry standard photonics and tools such as Ansys Lumerical MODE, FDTD, DEVICE, and INTERCONNECT, to optimize device and circuit performance. Design integrated photonic chips for foundry fabrication using standard layout sof tware such as GDSFactory, GDSpy, Nazca, and KLayout. Characterize integrated photonic devices and circuits experimentally using die- and wafer-level test and measurement equipment. Lead experiments in quantum optics and photonics, analyzing experimental results and identifying opportunities for innovation.

Salary at Booz Allen is determined by various factors, including but not limited to location, the individual's particular combination of education, knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience, as well as contract-specific affordability and organizational requirements. The projected compensation range for this position is $67,600.00 to $154,000.00 (annualized USD). The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for this position and is just one component of Booz Allen's total compensation package for employees. Basic Qualifications:
- Experience with integrated photonic device and circuit design
- Experience taping out silicon photonics chips with commer cia l foundries
- Experience using photonic device design sof tware such as Lumerical, R Sof t, MEEP, or COMSOL, and layout sof tware such as Cadence, GDSFactory, Optodesigner, or KLayout
- Experience in experimental quantum optics and device characterization using standard optical instrumentation such as lasers, detectors, or modulators
- Knowledge of standard CMOS nanofabrication te chn iques such as lithography, etching, or deposition for photonic devices
- Knowledge of quantum mechanics, quantum optics, and quantum information theory
- Ability to obtain a Secret clearance
- Doctorate degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or Materials Sciences
Additional Qualifications:
- Experience with photonic sensing and optical gyroscopes or accelerometers
- Knowledge of electronic-photonic integration and basics of integrated photonics packaging using optical or electrical
